How To Find Domain Name Treasures
It’s really not difficult to find domain name gems for your business.
The most important part of finding the right domain name for your Internet business is simply recognizing how critical it is to your success.
It’s amazing how many business owners choose a website domain name because it’s catchy, because it’s the name of their business or because of some other reason that has nothing to do with web site search engine optimization.
I can’t say it’s a make or break mistake to do this but it leaves so much marketing opportunity lost and it’s so simple that you really need to get this one right.
First do some basic keyword research around your market. Step in to the shoes of your customers and find out what phrases they would type into a search engine if they were looking to buy your product or service.
Make a list of these phrases and one by one put them into the free Google keyword tool to find out how many people search on each term monthly. Any more than 1000 a month is sufficient. In this step the more the merrier.
Once you’ve done this with each phrase, take the new list and enter each in the Google search bar. If this results number is less than 50,000 then the amount of competition for your keyword phrase is low enough for you to compete for the first page of Google.
Now it’s time to go find out if your phrase is available as a domain.
NOTE: we are assuming that your phrase makes sense and is directly relevant to your business.
There are several services that you can use for this. I use Godaddy to find and buy domain names and Hostgator to host my domains.
Simply enter your phrase and GoDaddy will automatically return available domains. Most SEO experts will agree that .com extensions are the best. Next best are .org and .net.
Many seasoned marketers buy multiple domains in the niche to box out the competition and develop a funnel or network of sites around keyword groups.
Another good tip if your exact phrase is not available is to add a suffix to your phrase and see if the combined phrase is available as a domain name. Prefixes work too but most would say you want your keyword phrase to show up first in searches.
Stay away from hyphens and other symbols as they are harder to remember and take juice away from your domain name.
A few suffix suggestions might be “home”, “guide”, “age”, “center”, “bay”or “central”. A little brainstorming and you can come up with a bunch more.
Taking these simple steps to find domain name treasures for your online business will pay off handsomely over time.
Don’t discard all your other keywords. Keep a list of other low competition and highly searched terms and you will have article titles, headlines, post categories and search engine optimized content phrases too!
