Affiliate Marketing – Signing up with another company to market their products or services and receiving a commission for each sale that you generate

Article Marketing - Writing keyword optimized articles to attract readers interested in certain topics and linking them to products or services related to the topic of the articles

Article Directory - Web sites where you can “publish” your articles by category and build authority on different topics.  Some of these sites have thousands of readers and can be valuable sources of free traffic

Autoresponder – A computer program that allows email to be sent to a list of subscribers on a scheduled basis.

Blog – The term blog stands for Weblog. A weblog used to be a way for website owners to communicate with a small group of people. Today, blogs have become much more as website owners sell products, offer opinions, syndicate their content, and more with blogging software and services.

Branding – The  collective process of combining your marketing messages, images, tone and identity in a consistent “brand” that conveys a specific message to your audience that connotes your values and beliefs.  Apple is know as an example of an excellent brand

Confirmed Opt-in – The process of having subscribers confirm their desire to receive your information by clicking on a confirmation link sent to them via email. This second step ensures that the person verifying their subscription made the original request.

Content – This term simply means the words on your website but has taken on a new meaning as syndication is becoming more widespread. See syndication for more detail.

Copywriting – The process of writing the words for a web page for the purpose of getting the reader to take some form of action.

CTR (Click through rate) – CTR is the number of people who click on your pay per click ad compared to the number of people who view the ad. Example: If 1000 people see your ad and 100 click the ad, your CTR is 10%.

Display URL – A pay per click term meaning the web address (URL) you want people to see when they see your ad. In most cases it can be different from the Target URL, which allows you to use an ad tracker without people seeing the long ad tracker link.

Directory – A categorized list of information. Yahoo is a directory whereas Google is a search engine.

Domain Name – The core phrase in your URL, i.e. in the URL http://www.internetmoneymap.com, “internet money map” is the domain name.  Domain names are purchased and owned pieces of internet “property” on which you build your web sites and web pages

Downline – A term that describes the group of people in an MLM (multi level marketing) program who have joined that program under a specific sponsor.

Download – The process of saving a file to your personal computer from a website. On Windows PCs it usually involves clicking a link with the right mouse button. On a Mac it usually involves holding down the shift key while clicking a link. In both cases, you then choose where on your computer to store the file.

Ebook – An electronic book, suitable for reading on a computer monitor. The standard is to create eBooks in PDF format, which can be viewed by any computer or printed.

Ezine – An electronic magazine delivered to subscribers, usually via email.

Follow Up Series – A series of email messages delivered over time to prospective customers who have requested further information.

FTP – Stands for File Transfer Protocol. A computer program that allows transfer of files from your personal computer to a web server.

Forum – An online gathering of people with a common interest. Forums are run by moderators who approve messages.  Forums are great sources of free traffic as well.

Hosting Provider– A company that “rents” space on a web server to customers who want to own a web page/site.

HTML – Stands for HyperText Markup Language, HTML is the code that enables web pages to display text formatting and pictures.

Joint Venture – Usually an agreement between partners where one person owns a mailing list and the other person wants to promote a product.  The list owner mails a promotion for the product owner and earns a commission on all sales.

Keyword Research – The process of researching words and phrases that people frequently use in search engines to find information about certain products and services

Lead Generation – The processes used to convince people to ask for more information about a particular product or service.

Membership Sites – Also referred to as “continuity” sites.  These are sites that are set up to encourage people to buy a service that charges a recurring monthly fee for information released to the buyer on “continuous” basis – usually monthly

Moderator – The person who controls which messages are displayed on a forum. The moderator is usually an expert in the subject of the forum he or she moderates, and helps keep inappropriate postings off the list of messages forum members see.

MP3 – A type of audio file that can be heard on personal computers or MP3 players. Most teleseminars are recorded in MP3 format.

Multi Level Marketing (MLM) – A type of business that pays commissions to people based on the sales of other people that they recruit. The person who recruits others is called the upline, while the person who was recruited is called the downline.

Niche Marketing – Selling products and services to a group of people with a specific common interest. “Niches” are submarkets of larger markets.  An example might be; one niche market of the weight loss market is the “eliminate belly fat” niche

Opt-in – The process whereby a reader requests more information from a site. The reader is “opting” to be included on a mailing list. All legitimate email marketers use an opt-in process to ensure that their selling messages are sent only to people who want to receive them.

Outsourcing – Giving the performance of any business task to someone outside your organization in exchange for a fee.  This allows business owners to delegate work to others without incurring the overhead of internal employees

PPC (Pay Per Click) Advertising – A type of advertising in which the advertiser pays only when someone clicks on his or her ad/link. Google AdWords and Overture are examples of pay-per-click advertising.  Facebook Ads have become a more recent popular PPC vehicle.

PDF – Stands for Portable Document Format. PDF files can be read by any computer that has the free Adobe PDF reader and a secure way to distribute documents that can only be modified by authorized owners

Private Label Rights (PLR) – Rights that are granted/sold/purchased that accompany products with their sale so that the purchaser has the right to resell or giveaway the products.  There are many different levels to PLR

RSS – RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is one format that websites use to syndicate content. To see content that is syndicated you need a special program (called an aggregator) or you can view it on certain websites designed for this purpose.

Sales Letter – A web page with a singular purpose of convincing the reader to buy the product or service being written about

Script – A set of programming commands that cause a computer to act in a particular way. There are many scripting languages (such as PERL and PHP).  These languages are the “code” that programmers use to create programs.

Search Engine – A site that finds other sites or files based on keywords. Google and Bing are the two most popular search engines.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – The multidimensional process of making a website, webpage or any web content more “attractive” to the search engines.  Off page SEO involves using techniques outside the confines of the web page and on-page SEO involves manipulating words, phrases and different techniques on the web page to attract the search engines

Shopping Cart – A script or service that allows website owners to have autoresponders, create order forms, create a catalog of products, manage client lists, deliver digital products, run an affiliate program, and more – all from one site or using one piece of software.

Social Media – A web based medium of communication consisting of the collective group of sites on the internet that invite and encourage social interaction and communication.  Facebook, Twitter and MySpace are three of the Internet’s main social media sites

Split Testing – The process of sending visitors to different versions of the same web page in order to test the effectiveness of the different versions. Often called A/B split testing, a program sends visitors to alternative versions of a web page randomly even though they clicked the same link.

Squeeze Page (Also called Landing Page) – A short web page that teases the reader with some information and then encourages them to provide their name and email address to get further information. Squeeze Pages are often used for lead generation and list building

Subscriber – A person who asks to join a mailing list.  Often the first stage of becoming a customer

Syndication – The process of displaying content from one site on another site.

Target URL – (Also called a destination URL) A pay per click term meaning the website where people will go when they click on your ad.

Teleseminar – A conference phone call where many people listen and experts discuss a particular topic(s). Teleseminar calls are often recorded and provided to customers in MP3 format for future listening.

Thank You Page – The page a customer is sent to upon successful purchase of a product. The thank you page is often the page links are provided to download the product purchased.

Traffic – This term refers to the people, subscribers and customers that Internet Marketers “drive” to sites to get them to buy their products and services

Webinar – A conference call accompanied by some form of visual presentation, usually a video or Powerpoint type presentation where experts discuss a particular topic(s)

WYSIWYG – Stands for “What You See Is What You Get”.  A WYSWYG (“wizeewig”) editor is essentially an HTML editor that allows non technical marketers to design pages in a user friendly fashion without knowing anything about programming.
